	Who needs the course? . . . . . A First Aid certificate is a prerequisite for anyone considering taking any of the RYA Instructors courses or Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster practical assessments. The course is a useful reassurance for anyone who goes to sea either as Skipper or Crew. There is no formal assessment during the course, students will be awarded the RYA First Aid Certificate which is valid for three years from the date of issue after completing the course. A copy of the First Aid Manual will be provided to all students on arrival. Enquire here.
	This course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for instructors, skippers and crews of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven. The syllabus is based on the recommendations of the Health & Safety Executive and DoT. This certificate also fulfils the requirements of the DoT code of practice for small commercial vessels. For commercial sailors and watersports instructors the course has to be taken every three years. Once trained most people draw little on their First Aid knowledge, but aligning this with changes in first aid practices and recently CPR, refresher courses are a must for the serious minded in health and safety. 	Cost . . . . . The Health and Safety Executive recognise this course and endorse it as being the equivalent of the Appointed Persons First Aid course for the workplace. Courses can be tailormade for the workplace. Cost is £75 per person plus the cost of the manual at £12.99. Enquire here.
	Course directives. . . . . By the end of the course, the students should be able to: Demonstrate artificial ventilation & chest compression (C P R) Demonstrate how to turn a casualty into the recovery position Detail the treatment for shock.
	Apply direct pressure to a wound and control bleeding. Outline the prevention, recognition & treatment of hypothermia. Outline the treatment for asthma attacks, burns, diabetic emergencies, epilepsy & heart attacks.
